Top Wedding Movies (part 1)*

Some nights you just need to get excited about weddings. Maybe your ex broke up with you and the thought of being in a wedding makes your stomach churn. Maybe you got married so long ago that your rose colored wedding glasses have lost their hue. Maybe your bride is super stressed and you want a fun way to kick back and watch other people lose their minds over weddings. Here is part of of my top wedding movies. Speaking of, can The Godfather be considered a wedding movie?

*According to Lindsay. This is in no way based in fact or reasoning of any kind other than my own enjoyment. Take it all with a grain of salt. This is not meant to be in list form, but some movies with similar themes have been grouped together.

Maid of Honor: What To Do Before The Wedding

Justin Marantz via Style Me Pretty // Dwayne Larson Photography Style Me Pretty

In addition to what is expected for a bridesmaid, here are a few ideas we can get you started:

Before the Wedding

1. Location scouting

Oh, the bride wants to have a destination wedding and needs you to fly out to look at beaches with her? Say it ain’t so! Even if your bride is not a jet-setter she may need your help looking at locations. You’re there to help her think of things she may not on her own. Example: Is there someplace for the grandparents to escape the sun if the wedding is outdoors? How are people going to get from the ceremony site to the reception location? Is parking going to be an issue? Does the location require you to use their caterer and photographer or will she be able to choose her own? Etc.

Pro-tip: There is a difference between thinking something is a bad idea for logistical reasons, like having the ceremony at the perfect little chapel that is 100 miles from the most Pinterest perfect reception site, and a bad idea because it is not how you would do it. Always give advice from a logistical place unless she asks otherwise. (Which she could as she chose you as her MoH for a reason.)

You are Not a Horrible Person

Bridesmaid, you are not a horrible person. Brides, if you’re reading this, look away. Here’s the thing people hint at, or make jokes about, but never really say out loud unless it’s a Katherine Heigl movie: being a bridesmaid can be rough at times because you’re asked to invest time, effort and money into something that is not about you and you don’t get paid to do it.

I’ve found society likes to paint this emotion as “bitter” or “jealousy” but ladies, we know this is not true. Maybe the root of that feeling applies once in a blue moon, but in general I’ve found if a bridesmaid isn’t 100% stoked it’s because… she’s human.

Gasp! Shock! Taylor Swift surprise face!

1. The Knot

This is one of the HUGE wedding websites for bridesmaids as well as brides. Maybe you’ve heard your bride talk about it before. They offer a lot of different tools, everything from hosting wedding websites to showcasing vendors to holding forums for users to talk amongst themselves. While it clearly has a lot to offer brides, it’s also a great wedding website for bridesmaids/maids of honor.

What Type of Bridesmaid Are You?

Brumley and Wells

While there are many things we cannot control in life, the type of bridesmaid you are is not one of them. This is an example of how brides think about their bridesmaids and I think Stephanie does a great job of succinctly summarizing the subtle differences.

Spoiler alert: There is no one-size-fits-all bridesmaid reaction. After the excitement wears off and reality sets in a number of things could happen. We all know people respond to stress in different ways; it’s part personality, part personal history and part situational. Some people ignore the stressor until it’s too late to deal with it (not recommended) while others overcompensate and try too hard. There’s a good in-between, I promise! I call it the Goldilocks Bridesmaid — you’re not too pushy, you’re not too aloof, you’re juuuuuuuust right. Before we get there, let’s look at the type of bridesmaid you want to avoid:
