My Biggest Maid of Honor Mistake (And How You Can Avoid It!)

As we’re getting to be such good friends, internet, I feel comfortable admitting my biggest Maid of Honor mistake. I won’t lie to you, it wasn’t pretty. Discussing “missteps” is painful for everyone, but I am hopeful that in sharing this story it will prevent one of you from doing it in the future.

I’m fortunate that in my case the bride had a great sense of humor about it, she even laughed while it was happening, but it could have been bad. I mean, really bad…

The First 5 Things Bridesmaids Need to Do

Braedon Photography

1. Shake ya Tail Feather

Congratulations! It’s a huge honor to be asked to stand by your bride on her wedding day. Her wedding will be one of the most memorable (and expensive) days of her life. And she wants you to share it with her! Take a moment to dance it out (or internally squee if you’re in public) before you think about the things bridesmaids need to do.
Pro-tip: Dance it out is a great way to handle stress throughout the wedding planning process. You will need more dance parties in the future. Like the great Christina Yang says, “dancing makes you brave!”

How does a Maid of Honor differ from a Bridesmaid?

Braedon Photography via Style Me Pretty // Gia Canali via Style Me Pretty

The time has come, your best friend said, to talk of many things. Of shoes, and drinks and Brazilian wax, and ohhhhh, how that stings! Of how her fiancé is super hot and wait! Who could she get to sing?

Your best friend and/or sister has asked you to her maid of honor. That’s amazing! She wants you to be by her side while she marries the love of her life, but she hasn’t really given you details about what it involves… For some reason, it’s kind of assumed that women just know what it means to be in a wedding. It can be overwhelming and confusing. What exactly does a bridesmaid do? What additional tasks do I, as the Maid of Honor, have? When should I start planning her shower? Who is expected to pay for the bachelorette party? How much money do I have to spend to help someone else get married? Wait, how many gifts am I expected to buy? Where do I even start?!

10+ More Ways to be the Best Bridesmaid Ever (Wedding Day)

+ a free printable checklist! (That’s right, I said free.)

1. Show up on time to get ready

If the bride wants you there at 8am to get your hair done and you’re not a morning person, hit Starbucks on the way and get there at 7:59. Why? Because you’re the best bridesmaid ever and you are prepared. You’re not going to be hungover and complain about the time (because you know to Don’t Be a Jerk). You’re going to arrive with your game face on because it’s her wedding day (even if the sun hasn’t risen yet). Because there’s always coffee. And maybe some mimosas. You could even come with a playlist loaded on your phone so everyone can be primp in style.

10+ Ways to be the Best Bridesmaid Ever (Before the Wedding)

Abbie McFarland Photography via Style Me Pretty // Brumley & Wells

Preface: This is a long-form list that perhaps goes into too much detail (is there really such a thing as too much detail when you’e researching?)

1. Do your research

Timeline: Yesterday, today and tomorrow.
If you haven’t been in a wedding before you’ll feel more relaxed and less stressed if you have a handle on some things (like how a wedding shower is different from a bridal shower). In the long run being better informed will help your bride out too— you’ll be a great resource for her to bounce ideas off of or call for a second opinion. You won’t only be the best bridesmaid ever, you’ll be the Yoda of weddings.
